Uncorking the Secrets of Wine and Cheese: Pairing with a Side of Gouda Giggles"

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

Here are the cheese stars of our “Cheesed Off” game, paired with wines for a match made in comedy heaven!

At Fat Egg, we take our work seriously, even if it involves cheese and wine.

We've diligently tested these pairings (for science, of course), but let's be clear – we're comedy writers, cheese enthusiasts, and wine lovers. Connoisseurs? Not yet, but we're getting there, one laugh and cheesy grin at a time!" 🧀🍷😄 Say cheese,

Kate and Elin Fat Egg Chief Chuckle Officers

The cheese - Brie: It's like the cheese version of a cosy blanket - soft, creamy, and always there to comfort you on a cheese platter.

The wine - A sparkling wine like Champagne or Prosecco. The bubbles cleanse your palate, making each creamy bite of Brie taste like a dream.

The cheese - Camembert: So smooth, it's like the James Bond of cheeses. It's French, sophisticated, and has a licence to thrill your taste buds.

The wine - A buttery Chardonnay or a light, fruity Beaujolais. These wines complement the creamy texture of Camembert.

The cheese - Edam: If cheeses were voted "Most Likely to be a Frisbee," Edam would win by a cheesy landslide.

The wine - A light and crisp Riesling or a light lager beer. These options balance the mild, nutty flavours of Edam.

The cheese - Feta: The cheese that crumbles under pressure but always manages to pull itself together for a Greek salad cameo.

The wine - A light and zesty Sauvignon Blanc or a Greek Assyrtiko wine. The acidity in these wines pairs well with the saltiness of Feta.

The cheese - Gruyere: If this cheese were a person, it'd be the one at the party making cheesy puns all night long. It's Swiss and full of holes... in its jokes.

The wine - A Chardonnay or a Pinot Noir. Both the buttery Chardonnay and the fruity Pinot Noir work well with the nutty Gruyere.

The cheese - Manchego: The cheese that puts the "man" in "cheese-man-go." It's a Spanish delight that's as irresistible as a Flamenco dancer's moves.

The wine - A medium-bodied Tempranillo or a Spanish Rioja. These wines complement the nutty and earthy notes of Manchego.

The cheese - Mature Cheddar: Like a wise grandparent in the cheese world, this cheddar is so mature it starts sharing stories of the good ol' dairy days.

The wine - A bold red wine like a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Merlot. The rich fruit flavours complement the sharpness of the cheddar.

The cheese - Mozzarella: The cheese that's constantly trying to escape, as if it's auditioning for a magic show. But we always catch it and put it on our pizza.

The wine - A light and crisp Pinot Grigio. It's a simple choice that lets the fresh flavours of Mozzarella shine.

The cheese - Parmigiano Reggiano: The wise elder of the cheese family, with an accent so Italian, it makes your pasta feel more authentic just by being near it.

The wine - A full-bodied Italian red wine like Chianti or a rich Sangiovese. These wines match the intense and savoury notes of Parmigiano Reggiano.

The cheese - Pule Cheese: You know you're in for a wild cheese adventure when it's made from donkey milk. A rare delicacy that's as elusive as a unicorn.

The wine - A unique and bold choice would be a Serbian red wine like Vranac. It's a rare cheese, so why not pair it with an equally rare wine?

The cheese - Red Leicester: The cheese that's convinced it's auditioning for a role in a cheese - themed superhero movie. It's red, it's daring, and it's got a sharp sense of flavour.

The wine - A light and crisp Pinot Grigio or a dry Sauvignon Blanc. These white wines contrast the nutty, mellow flavour of Red Leicester.

The cheese - Roquefort: Meet the cheese that's got more blue veins than a gossiping grapevine. It's the ultimate in the world of fancy fungi.

The wine - A sweet dessert wine like a Port or a Sauternes. The sweetness balances the intense blue cheese flavour.

The cheese - Stinking Bishop: It's not just a cheese; it's a cheese with an attitude. This one is like the rock star of the dairy world - it lives for the stink.

The wine - A robust and spicy Zinfandel. The bold flavours of the wine stand up to the pungent aroma of Stinking Bishop.

So, whether you're sipping a sparkling wine with Brie, enjoying a buttery Chardonnay with Camembert, or diving into a bold Cabernet Sauvignon with Mature Cheddar, remember, it's all about the comedy in each bite and sip.
