Behind the scenes: Kangaroute -1935

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

This was our first project together with Meara Owen-Griffiths. I planned a plot early on where death occurs on a plane - I just did not envisage that we would travel back in time to1935!

This story is based on true live events - the first passenger long long long haul flight in 1935 departing from London, UK and arriving in Brisbane, Australia. It actually took 12 days, so our "modern day travel" is somewhat faster - even if you now have to consider the mass issues around all airports in the world in 2022!

So Meara knew about this flight and I knew a way to die, so all we needed were passangers, motive, someone to die and a detective. And I can tell you - it was way easier said than done! At the beginning we were not even sure who will be our Fat Egg ie murderer! It took some time for us to make sure we were happy with all the characters. Both Meara and I learnt that the downside of basing our characters on actual people from that era means a lot of background work as we needed to make sure everyone who is in the game could have been on the plane in 1935. We know it is all a made up game script, but still - if you use real life events then you might as well make sure it is all correct, right?!

After all the characters were finally in place, the story came together quite well and had a quick uptake. We finished the game on a Tuesday and my friends offered to test play it that very Friday - and just like magic in 3 days I was able to turn our raw script into booklets, guidelines and thanks to Diane Fuller and her great voiceover, we also had an Eggcellent female detective onboard and so the game went ahead without any issues! As we found out from our test players, one of the female characters needed to be changed as she simply was not likeable enough, so I went back to the drawing board and amended the game.

Our Kangaroute -1935 game is available for 6,8,10 and 12 players in English, Spanish and Hungarian and hopefully in other languages as well soon.

If you have played this game, please let us know how it went - send us photos, thoughts, likes or dislikes to info@fategg.co.uk!
